Podcast 012: Serial Rapist Tony Jackson

By Scott Fuller @FullerOnAir · On March 18, 2021

The latest episode of the FindJodi podcast is an hour-long focus on Tony Jackson, who was convicted in 1998 of raping four women in Minnesota (he was later connected via DNA to two additional rapes in Minnesota and Iowa). Listeners will also hear Jackson, in his own words, through archival audio recordings.

Three years earlier, on June 27, 1995, Jackson was living two blocks from the television station where Jodi Huisentruit worked, and one mile from the apartment complex where the news anchor disappeared early that morning.

FindJodi team member Jay Alberio was involved in Jackson’s arrest for the Woodbury (MN) Police Department and joins me on this episode to discuss Jackson’s crimes against women and what is known about any connection he might have to Jodi Huisentruit’s disappearance nearly 26 years ago.

Alberio is among those who believe Jackson needs a second look in the Huisentruit case.

Following Caroline Lowe’s investigative series into a possible connection between Tony Jackson and the Huisentruit case, in 1999 the Mason City Police conducted an investigation and released a statement.

1999 Mason City Police Department press release ‘clearing’ Jackson of the investigation into missing television news anchorwoman Jodi Huisentruit.

The department has not formally commented on Jackson any further.

Jackson has repeatedly denied any involvement with the Huisentruit case.

Worth A Second Look?

  • Tony Jackson has stated that he never met Jodi Huisentruit. This is contradicted by two witnesses, including a man who claims that he accompanied Jackson to the Southbridge Lounge in Mason City for the express purpose of meeting Jodi there. Jackson also worked at two restaurants in Mason City, including one that Jodi is known to have frequented.
  • A witness who jogged past Key Apartments (where Huisentruit lived) every morning at about 4:30 AM told FindJodi that she was nearly hit by a car speeding out of the complex parking lot the morning of the abduction. The vehicle she described was generally consistent with a car that Tony Jackson had purchased days before.
  • Stalking was likely an element of the Huisentruit abduction. Tony Jackson stalked some of his victims for months prior to attacking them, including inside their homes and workplaces.

Anyone with information about Jodi’s case can reach out to the Mason City Police Department at (641) 421-3636. Information can also be provided to the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations at (515) 725-6010 or dciinfo@dps.state.ia.us.
