UPDATE: The Mason City city council approved Captain Mike McKelvey as the City’s next police chief.
Pending city council approval, Mason City Police Captain Mike McKelvey will be the City’s next police chief.
In announcing his selection of Captain McKelvey to succeed Chief Jeff Brinkley, who is retiring in November, City Administrator Aaron Burnett said, “Captain McKelvey has served the department well in his career and has been a great resource at the department during my tenure with the City of Mason City. Over the last 7 years, I have come to know Mike very well and I have the highest confidence in his ability to guide the department as Chief of Police into the future. I believe he will carry on the progress in supporting officers both on and off duty, work to to further increase officer recruitment and retention, continue to build relationships with the community, and facilitate the department’s ability to navigate the ever-evolving world of law enforcement.”
Captain McKelvey became a MCPD officer on June 16, 1995, just 11 days before Jodi Huisentruit was abducted on her way to anchor the morning news at KIMT-TV. If his appointment is approved by the city council, Captain McKelvey will be the fifth police chief since Jodi disappeared on June 27, 1995.
The city council will consider Captain McKelvey’s appointment at a meeting on August 5.
If you have any information on what happened to Jodi, call the Mason City Police Department at (641) 421-3636 or email Iowa DCI Special Agent Ryan Herman at rherman@dps.state.ia.us. You can reach to FindJodi anonymously.
